Demo

Tuesday, December 29, 2009

On November 21, the fantastic Faith Prince joined the Northwestern University students in the studio to do a demo recording of songs from Not Wanted on the Voyage, our adaptation of the provocative novel by Timothy Findley. It was a sublime experience.

Samples will be posted on the Project page soon.

Not Wanted on the Voyage @ AMTP

Monday, December 7, 2009

Our adaptation of Timothy Findley's provocative novel Not Wanted on the Voyage will have an extensive developmental process with Northwestern University's American Music Theatre Project under Amanda Dehnert's direction. In a fresh, new approach to musical development, Northwestern will be devoting two full courses to the development of this piece from January through March 2010.

On November 21, Broadway's Faith Prince joined the cast in the studio to create a demo recording of the production. Samples will be posted soon.

Interview

Friday, September 18, 2009

A couple of weeks ago we did a really fun interview with Bethany Turner on her radio show Southwest of Broadway. She's great and we had a lot of laughs (listen for the beauty pageant questions toward the end of the interview -- ouch). You'll also hear a cut song from The Story of My Life and some other goodies.

Listen to the interview HERE.

Facelift

Saturday, August 1, 2009

Courtesy of our terrific web designer Josh Levine, we have a slightly new look for the website and a few new features -- so welcome! We generally think it's a more pleasant experience getting around the site and things are a bit easier to find now. So click away and have fun.
The biggest change is the addition of the Store where you can purchase sheet music in a clean and efficient way. We've also changed the method in which we deliver sheet music -- it's now sent via email in password-protected PDF files rather than by snail-mail. The old way was just way too labor-intensive.

Also, on the Contact page there is a sign up for our mailing list. We promise not to bombard you with nonsense if you sign up, but when there's something important to share, we'll get it out as soon as we can.
As always, thanks for dropping by and we hope you like the changes.

Purchasing Sheet music

Thursday, June 11, 2009

There have been a ton of requests for the sheet music for various songs from the website including stuff from The Story of My Life. We're keeping our fingers crossed that the vocal selections for TSOML will be published someday, but in the meantime, if you are interested in purchasing something go ahead and shoot an email to neil@bartramandhill.com and Neil will let you know the procedure.

Thanks ....

Wednesday, June 3, 2009

Thanks to everyone who came out to the performance and CD signing yesterday. It was great to see so many people and to hear Malcolm and Will sing those songs again. Special thanks to Steven Sorrentino from Barnes & Noble who did such a fantastic job getting the word out about the event and for making us feel so well taken care of.
So, it's official ..... the Broadway Cast Recording of The Story of My Life is now available in stores.

TSOML OBC @ AZ + B&N

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

The cast  recording of The Story of My Life is now available for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble online.

The official street date is still June 2.

It sounds frigging amazing.

TSOML Digital download

Friday, April 3, 2009

We're told that the digital version of the OBC recording of The Story of My Life will be available on iTunes (and other digital outlets) on May 19, 2009.
It's no surprise that Malcolm and Will turned in amazing performances in the studio. We think the album is going to sound really great. Don't take our word for it, Peter Filichia wrote a great column about the recording session. Link to it here.

Northwestern University

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

We will be working on Act 2 of Not Wanted on the Voyage at Northwestern University next month. Last year we had a fantastic time working on Act 1 but this is the first opportunity we've had to get back to this cool project. Amanda Dehnert will be directing and Daniel Green will be music directing, and if we have half as talented a cast as we had last year (those pesky college students have a tendency to, you know, graduate), we'll be thrilled. NU has an amazing theatre department and a great program called the American Music Theatre Project that lets writers like us hang out and experiment and play in a way that no other environment really can.

Updates ....

Thursday, March 5, 2009

  • The Broadway cast album for The Story of My Life will be recorded on March 13 by PS Classics. I understand it will be released June 2.
  • The section of this website devoted to The Story of My Life has been updated.
  • The section of this website devoted to Clara's Piano has been updated with a couple of demos. One sung by Judy Kuhn and the other by Malcolm Gets.
  • More news about upcoming projects will be coming soon.

Monday, February 16, 2009

There are now two full songs posted on The Story Of My Life website. "Mrs. Remington", performed by Malcolm Gets and "The Butterfly", performed by Will Chase. These feature the fantastic orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick and the amazing orchestra that plays them every night at the Booth Theatre.

Share your story

Saturday, February 14, 2009

We've received countless emails from people who have seen The Story Of My Life and have been moved to either reconnected with a friend, or to recall a story about a formative friendship in their lives. On the show's website there's now a new spot to share these stories.

Top Ten Things we've learned so far

Monday, February 9, 2009

We've had 1 full week of previews and things are going very well. We are really proud of the show and everyone involved is working at the top of their game. We are overwhelmingly thankful that we have amazing producers who believe in the show and we are confident that their efforts will be rewarded.
As we navigate the stressful waters of this journey, we thought we'd jot down a list of the Top 10 things that we have learned along the way. We're not pretending to give anyone advice, but rather complie a checklist for ourselves should we ever be fortunate enough to be in this position again.
So without further ado:
THE TOP TEN THINGS WE HAVE LEARNED SO FAR
10. Observe the "no assholes rule". Work with nice people.
9. Don't wait. Fix everything you can out of town.
8. Hire great actors. They'll make you look good.
7. You can never please everyone, so just try to please yourself.
6. Don't underestimate the power of medicinal sleep aids.
5. Sit among the audience to see if the show is working. It’s excruciating, but they're never wrong.
4. Try not to worry about the things you can’t control.
3. Completely control the things you CAN control.
2. There's no such thing as “previews” anymore.
And the number one thing we've learned so far .....
1. “Walk slowly. It doesn’t happen that often.”

Friday, February 6, 2009

There are $20 student rush tickets for The Story Of My Life (that's $20 including the facility fee) available one hour before show time at the Booth Theatre box office (45th St. between Broadway and 8th Ave.). You can get one ticket per student ID.
There are also ... you know ... regular priced tickets available at the box office or at Telecharge.com.

and so it begins

Monday, February 2, 2009

Tonight is the invited dress rehearsal of The Story Of My Life.

At this performance ...

Saturday, January 31, 2009

We just wanted to give some air time to our fantastic understudies for The Story Of My Life: Jim Stanek (left) and Bradley Dean. Both these guys are brilliant and we are so lucky to have them on board.

In praise of jonathan tunick ...

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

This past Monday, legendary orchestrator Jonathan Tunick was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame. He has contributed his talents to many of the most literate and sophisticated scores of the last 30-odd years and in the process has created some of the most iconic sounds for a Broadway orchestra. And he's a pretty neat guy too.
We had our sitzprobe for The Story Of My Life today and it was ... thrilling. Jonathan has done an amazing job on the orchestrations. We are fortunate to have a nine-piece orchestra and Jonathan has made them sound like twice as many. He is brilliant at what he does. It is an honor to have our show on his estimable resume.
SIDE NOTE: We are planning to go into the studio next week to put down a couple of songs from the show for streaming on the official website (which, by the way, has been recently updated and looks amazing). The ambient music that is on the site currently is a placeholder that Neil did. We'll post a note here when the new recordings are available.

WIll Chase & Malcolm Gets

Monday, January 19, 2009

Rehearsals are going -- in Richard Maltby's words -- "stunningly", but in the meantime, we thought we'd take this opportunity to plug some upcoming projects that feature our extraordinary actors.
First of all, Will Chase. Will starred as Roger in the final cast of RENT on Broadway. The last performance of that amazing cast was filmed for a limited theatrical release last fall, and it is being released on DVD on February 3. Pre-order it at Amazon.com. For people who were disappointed in the 2005 film adaptation, this is the real deal.
Not to be outdone, Malcolm Gets is featured in the upcoming movie of Grey Gardens. It's a dramatization of the infamous documentary about 'Big' Edie and 'Little' Edie Beale and stars Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. This film will air on HBO beginning in April.
Also, Malcolm has been hard at work on a solo recording that will be released by P.S. Classics sometime soon. We've heard some early mixes from these recording sessions and it sounds phenomenal. Keep your eyes open for this one.
Also, a plug for the remarkable Jeffrey Kuhn who is now starring on Broadway in THE 39 STEPS. That production is on a brief hiatus before re-opening at the Helen Hayes Theatre on January 21st. Jeffrey was brilliant (and Dora Award nominated) in an earlier incarnation of THE STORY OF MY LIFE that ran in Toronto. Pretty much anything Jeffrey does is worth checking out.

Look up. Look way up ...

Wednesday, January 7, 2009

The marquee went up the other day at the Booth Theatre.
That ....

is.....

cool.

New Year, New World ...

Monday, January 5, 2009

I admit that the world of social networking has so far eluded us, but it's hard not to acknowledge what a useful (and fun) tool it is for sharing information. To that end, The Story Of My Life now has visibility on both MySpace and Facebook.
Please check out these pages and help us spread the word about the show.

Tickets now on sale ...

Wednesday, December 30, 2008

Tickets are now on sale for the Broadway production of The Story Of My Life at Telecharge.com.
Previews begin February 3, 2009 and opening night is February 19.

Website goodies ...

Monday, December 15, 2008

When we were at Goodspeed, Malcolm and Will thought that since the characters in the show meet when they are in 1st grade, it’d be fun to remind themselves of what they themselves were like at that age. So they both brought in pictures.

Oh .... my ...... god.

You can see a couple of those pictures if you go to the show’s website (www.TheStoryOfMyLife.com) and click on “Who’s Who”.
See if this picture of the lovable Mater from Pixar/Disney’s “Cars” reminds you of anybody ....

bound for broadway ...

Tuesday, December 2, 2008

A couple of years ago we were involved in an event called Bound For Broadway. It‘s an annual concert of material from shows in development which are on a trajectory that may some day lead them to, well .... Broadway. We have been invited back this year for an updated look at The Story Of My Life.

The concert is at 8:00 on Monday, December 8 at Merkin Concert Hall. It looks like a great lineup. All the participating writers will be interviewed by Liz Callaway and will have songs presented from their shows.

More information is here.

New website ...

Monday, November 24, 2008

There is a new website devoted to the Broadway production of The Story Of My Life. The address is (appropriately):
www.TheStoryOfMyLife.com
We will gradually be removing the outdated material about TSOML that we have on this website (particularly the old demos referred to below) in favor of the official site.
Tickets for the Broadway show go on sale December 28th, 2008 at Telecharge.com.
